Why you should choose Umeda Sky over Shibuya Sky

Introduction

If you’re trying to decide between visiting the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka or the Shibuya Sky in Tokyo, let me make it easier for you: Umeda Sky is the way to go! While both offer stunning views, Umeda Sky has several key advantages that make it a better choice, especially if you’re on a budget or looking for a more flexible experience. Let’s break down why Umeda Sky Building should be at the top of your list.

Price: Get the Same Stunning Views for Less

Let’s start with the most obvious factor – How much doesUmeda Sky cost?. Tickets for Umeda Sky are typically around ¥2000 (12 Euro), while Shibuya Sky can set you back as much as ¥2,500 (16 euro). Umeda Sky Building offers panoramic views of Osaka and beyond for a much more affordable entry fee compared to Shibuya Sky. If you’re travelling with a group or a family, those savings can quickly add up. With Umeda Sky, you get a high-quality experience without the high price tag.

Weather Dependency: Umeda Sky is More Forgiving

Tokyo’s Shibuya Sky is an entirely outdoor observation deck, which means if the weather takes a turn for the worse – think rain, fog, or high winds – you’re out of luck. The outdoor areas can close, and you might not get the view you were hoping for (This sadly happened to us). On the other hand, Umeda Sky has both indoor and outdoor viewing options. This means that even on less-than-perfect weather days, you can still enjoy some fantastic views from the comfort and warmth of the building’s interior. You won’t have to worry about losing your ticket investment or missing out due to unpredictable weather.

Flexibility: No Time Constraints or Bookings Required

This is a major reason why we think you should choose Umeda Sky over Shibuya Sky. To get a good time slot at Shibuya Sky, you need to book a month in advance as soon as tickets become available. This can be a hassle if you’re trying to keep your schedule flexible or if you’re not sure exactly when you’ll arrive—and most importantly, when you don’t know the weather forecast! Umeda Sky, on the other hand, offers a much more laid-back experience. You can just show up, buy your ticket, and head on up. It’s a great choice for travellers who prefer a more spontaneous itinerary.

Unique Vibe: Quirky, Less Crowded, More Authentic

If you’ve been to observation decks in New York City, Shibuya Sky might feel a bit familiar—trendy and polished, but often crowded. Umeda Sky, on the other hand, offers a unique and quirky experience. The building’s “Floating Garden Observatory” feels like an architectural wonder, with its futuristic escalators and open-air rooftop. Plus, you’ll encounter fewer crowds (it will still be busy), making it easier to savour the experience without jostling for space.

And don’t forget the charming local touches: Umeda Sky has a romantic “Lovers’ Sanctuary,” where you can leave a lock as a memento of your visit, similar to Paris’s Pont des Arts but with a distinctly Japanese twist.

  • You will have to pay extra for the lock *around 8 euro and it does require advance booking because of the engraving. You seem to only be available to book it through a KLOOK package

A Rooftop Unlike Any Other

Umeda Sky features an open-air rooftop with a circular cutout that makes it feel like you’re floating among the clouds. The unique skywalk between the two towers offers 360-degree views of Osaka that are especially captivating at night, with the city lights stretching out into the distance—a completely different perspective from the neon-glow of Shibuya.

When Should You Visit Umeda Sky?

Sunset is always the ideal time to go to a rooftop, but it can get crowded. We went around 8 PM in early June, and it was perfect. Pro tip: avoid wearing white or light-colored clothing at night since the fluorescent lighting can make them see-through! Also, bring a light layer as it can get chilly up there, even in summer.

Our Verdict

Umeda Sky offers a more affordable, flexible, and weather-friendly option compared to Shibuya Sky, with a unique vibe and fewer crowds. So, if you’re looking for a more relaxed and authentic experience in Japan, skip the familiar observation deck feel of Shibuya Sky and head to Umeda Sky for something truly memorable.
